Applications
Precise temperature control is critical for successful molecular diagnostic assays. Cooling and heating technologies, such as thermal cyclers and temperature-controlled incubators, are essential for achieving accurate and reliable results in molecular diagnostics.
Why cooling and heating is important for molecular diagnostics:
- Enzyme activity: Many molecular diagnostic techniques rely on enzymes, such as polymerases, ligases, and restriction enzymes, to catalyze reactions. Enzymes are susceptible to temperature, and their activity can be affected by even small changes in temperature. Therefore, it is important to carefully control the temperature during the reaction to ensure optimal enzyme activity.
- Stability of reagents: Some reagents used in molecular diagnostics are sensitive to temperature and can degrade over time if not stored at the proper temperature. For example, Taq polymerase, a commonly used enzyme in PCR, is sensitive to heat and can lose activity if not stored properly.
- Reproducibility: Accurate temperature control is essential for ensuring the reproducibility of results in molecular diagnostic assays. Even slight variations in temperature can lead to differences in reaction efficiency, yield, and specificity, which can affect the accuracy and reliability of the results.
Technology
ACHU unit has 2 thermoelectric coolers that are controlled by a PID controller.
A thermoelectric cooler, also known as a Peltier cooler, is a device that uses the Peltier effect to transfer heat from one side of the device to the other. When an electric current is applied to the semiconductor material, heat is absorbed on one side of the material and released on the other side, creating a temperature difference. This temperature difference can be used to cool the side of the device that absorbs heat, making it useful in a variety of applications such as refrigeration, air conditioning, and electronic cooling.
Thermoelectric coolers have several advantages over traditional cooling methods, such as no moving parts, silent operation, and miniaturization, making them ideal for use in portable or compact devices. However, they also have some limitations, including lower cooling capacity and efficiency compared to other cooling methods.
What is important when choosing the right product?
Temperature Accuracy
Maintaining temperature accuracy involves achieving precise and consistent temperatures that are reproducible throughout the entire duration of the run, and for every sample contained within the block.
Temperature Uniformity
The temperature should be consistent throughout the block, producing the same outcomes for samples located at the center or on the periphery of the block, as well as during the entire operation.
Size of the Unit
The unit should have slightly bigger than the footprint of an SBS format plate and the height should be optimal for pipetting tips to reach.
